Sludge Concentration
How feed solids content changes everything
Sludge concentration (% DS) is the fraction of dry solids in the feed. It converts a volumetric flow into a solids load and strongly influences which capacity limit governs and how much polymer is needed.
Why concentration matters so much
At 1% DS a cubic metre of sludge holds ten kilograms of solids; at 5% it holds fifty. So the same volumetric flow can represent very different solids loads. Thin sludge tends to be hydraulically limited and benefits from pre-thickening, while thick sludge is solids-limited. Concentration also affects polymer demand per cubic metre and the achievable cake solids, so it is measured carefully during sizing.
