Frequently Asked Questions

Technical answers to common questions about screw press sludge dewatering technology, sizing, operation, and project delivery.

A screw press is a continuous sludge dewatering device. Sludge enters a cylindrical screen drum where a slowly rotating screw conveys it forward. As the sludge moves through progressively narrower sections, water is squeezed out through the screen gaps while the dewatered cake discharges at the end. The gentle, low-speed operation minimizes energy use and wear.

Depending on the sludge type, a screw press typically achieves 15–25% dry solids for biological sludges and up to 35–45% for mineral or primary sludges. Performance depends on feed concentration, polymer conditioning, and operating parameters.

Yes, polymer conditioning is essential for optimal performance. The polymer creates flocs that allow efficient water release through the screen. Proper polymer selection and dosing significantly impact cake dryness and capture rate. Our engineering team provides polymer selection guidance as part of every assessment.

Screw presses are designed for minimal maintenance. The slow rotation speed (1–3 RPM) means very low mechanical wear. Key maintenance includes periodic screen inspection and cleaning, bearing lubrication, and polymer system checks. Most units operate 8,000+ hours between major service intervals.

Screw press sizing is based on several parameters: sludge type, feed concentration (% dry solids), daily sludge production (kg DS/day), operating hours, and target cake dryness. Our RF series covers capacities from 6 to 1,664 kg DS/h. Use our Engineering Assessment tool for a preliminary sizing recommendation.

The RF series spans 15 models from the RF-131 (6 kg DS/h at 1% feed, single unit) to the RF-404 (400 kg DS/h at 1% feed and up to 1,664 kg DS/h at 3% feed, four units). This covers small package plants, medium municipal facilities, and large industrial installations. Multiple units can be installed in parallel for higher throughput.

Screw presses operate most efficiently with feed concentrations between 0.5% and 3.0% dry solids. Lower concentrations increase the required volume throughput, while higher concentrations improve dewatering efficiency. Pre-thickening may be recommended for very dilute feeds below 0.3%.

Screw presses are among the most energy-efficient dewatering technologies. Motor power ranges from 0.20 kW (RF-131) to 5.15 kW (RF-404). The low-speed operation (1–3 RPM) and continuous process mean significantly lower energy costs compared to centrifuges, which typically consume 10–30x more power.

Yes. Screw presses are designed for fully automatic, unattended operation. Once commissioned and tuned, the system runs continuously with automatic polymer dosing, self-cleaning wash water, and alarm monitoring. Many installations operate 24/7 without constant operator presence.

Wash water consumption is very low — from 24 L/h for the RF-131 to 320 L/h for the RF-404. This is a fraction of what belt filter presses require. The self-cleaning mechanism maintains screen performance while minimizing water use.

Screw presses excel in: energy efficiency (up to 95% less power), low noise (<60 dB vs 85+ dB), minimal maintenance, compact footprint, and unattended operation. Centrifuges may achieve slightly higher cake dryness in some applications but at significantly higher operating costs. For most municipal and industrial applications, screw presses provide the best total cost of ownership.

Belt filter presses require more operator attention, higher wash water volumes (10–50x more), and create odor issues due to open sludge handling. Screw presses are enclosed, automated, use minimal wash water, and produce comparable cake dryness. Belt presses may still be preferred for very high throughput mineral sludges.

Standard RF series units are typically available within 12–16 weeks from order confirmation. Complete systems including polymer preparation, controls, and ancillary equipment may require 16–24 weeks. Rental units for emergency or interim needs are often available within 2–4 weeks.
