Polymer Problems
Polymer make-up, ageing or dosing faults
Many dewatering problems are really polymer problems: poorly made-up solution, aged or degraded polymer, air-locked dosing pumps or the wrong product for the sludge. Because polymer drives flocculation, faults here show up as wet cake and cloudy filtrate.

Causes and corrective actions
| Possible cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|
| Under- or over-diluted make-up solution | Prepare to the recommended concentration and allow full maturation. |
| Aged or degraded polymer | Use fresh solution; avoid prolonged storage of made-up polymer. |
| Air-locked or worn dosing pump | Bleed air, check tubing and calibrate the pump. |
| Wrong polymer charge or molecular weight | Run jar tests to select a suitable product. |
