Industrial sludge characteristics and dewatering strategies
Industrial Sludge Overview
Industrial sludges vary enormously depending on the source industry and treatment process. Unlike municipal sludge, which has relatively predictable characteristics, industrial sludge can range from highly organic food waste to mineral-laden chemical precipitates.
Proper characterization is essential before selecting dewatering equipment. Key parameters include organic/inorganic ratio, particle size distribution, oil and grease content, fiber content, pH, and chemical composition.
Industrial Sludge Types
Chemical Sludge
From precipitation, neutralization, or coagulation processes
Oily Sludge
Petroleum, metalworking, food processing — high FOG content
Fibrous Sludge
Paper, textile, wood — long-fiber waste streams
Mineral Sludge
Mining, concrete, stone cutting — high inorganic content
