Sludge Types
DAF Sludge
Understanding DAF float sludge for effective dewatering
DAF Sludge Characteristics
Dissolved air flotation (DAF) units produce a float sludge that is typically concentrated at 3–8% dry solids. This sludge is characterized by high fat, oil, and grease content — particularly in food industry applications.
DAF sludge tends to blind conventional filter cloth rapidly, making belt filter presses and plate filter presses problematic. The self-cleaning multi-disc screw press is the preferred dewatering technology for DAF sludge.
Key Characteristics
- High fat, oil, and grease (FOG) content
- Typical dry solids: 3–8%
- Often mixed with biological sludge for treatment
- Requires careful polymer conditioning for optimal results
