Sludge Feed Control

Steady feed is the foundation of steady dewatering

A screw press performs best on a constant, well-mixed feed at a stable solids concentration. Surging or fluctuating feed upsets flocculation, destabilises cake formation and forces constant re-tuning of polymer and speed.

Elements of good feed control

  • A progressive-cavity or other low-pulsation feed pump for smooth flow.
  • A well-mixed feed tank so solids concentration stays constant.
  • Flow measurement so polymer can be paced to actual sludge flow.
  • Level control linking feed, screw speed and polymer together.

Pacing polymer to feed

The most stable systems measure sludge flow and solids and pace polymer proportionally, so dose per tonne of dry solids stays constant even as flow varies. Where sludge comes from a fluctuating source, a buffer or blend tank smooths out swings before the press, protecting cake quality and avoiding continual manual correction.
