Screw Speed Adjustment

Trading throughput against cake dryness

Screw speed sets how long sludge stays in the dewatering zone. Lower speed increases residence time and usually raises cake solids but reduces throughput; higher speed does the opposite. It is a primary tuning control once polymer is correct.

Speed, residence time and result

The screw typically turns at only a few revolutions per minute. Slowing it down lengthens the time sludge spends under compression, giving water more time to drain and producing a drier cake. Speeding it up moves sludge through faster for higher throughput but a wetter cake. Because speed and back pressure both influence cake dryness, adjust one at a time and let the process settle before making a further change.

Practical guidance

  • Need drier cake? Reduce speed first, in small steps.
  • Feed rate rising? Increase speed to avoid overfilling the screen.
  • Watch torque: too slow with high feed can overload the drive.
  • Many systems auto-modulate speed from flocculation-tank level.
