Screw Press Operation
Running a screw press dewatering system reliably day after day
A screw press is designed for continuous, largely unattended operation. Stable results depend on consistent sludge feed, correct polymer conditioning and a small number of process set points that operators learn to read and adjust.
The operating principle in practice
The four operator set points
Sludge feed rate
Matched to the machine hydraulic and solids loading capacity.
Polymer dose
Set to achieve strong, free-draining flocs without overdosing.
Screw speed
Controls residence time; lower speed generally raises cake solids.
Back pressure
Sets final compression of the cake at the discharge end.
Signs of healthy operation
- Clear to slightly cloudy filtrate with low suspended solids.
- Firm, crumbly cake discharging steadily, not smearing.
- Stable screw torque and steady flocculation-tank level.
- Low, constant wash-water use during scheduled cleaning cycles.
