Filtrate Management

Handling and returning the separated water

The filtrate is the water removed from the sludge. Its clarity is a direct indicator of dewatering performance, and its return to the plant must be managed so it does not overload the biological or clarification stages.

Filtrate as a performance gauge

Clear filtrate means solids are being captured in the cake; cloudy filtrate means fines are escaping and solids-capture rate is falling. Operators use filtrate clarity as an instant, no-cost check on polymer dose and back pressure. Persistently cloudy filtrate points to under-dosing, a blinded or damaged screen, or excessive back pressure forcing solids through.

Managing the return stream

  • Return filtrate to the plant inlet or a balancing tank, not directly to sensitive stages.
  • Account for the recycled solids and nutrient load in plant sizing.
  • Monitor filtrate suspended solids as a capture-rate KPI.
