Operation & Maintenance

Cake Handling & Discharge

Moving dewatered cake from the press to disposal

The dewatered cake discharges from the press as a firm, crumbly solid. How it is collected, conveyed and stored affects labour, hygiene and downstream disposal or reuse cost.

Common discharge arrangements

Direct to skip or bin

Cake drops straight into a container below the discharge chute.

Screw or belt conveyor

Conveys cake to a storage point, silo or truck loading area.

Cake storage silo

Buffers cake between dewatering and intermittent haulage.

Why cake dryness pays

Disposal is usually charged by weight, so every extra percentage point of dry solids removes water — and therefore weight and cost — from the haul. Drier cake is also easier to convey, store and reuse, whether as landfill, incineration feed, compost or agricultural product. This is why operators tune polymer, speed and back pressure to maximise cake solids within stable operation.
