Automatic Screen Cleaning

The self-cleaning mechanism that defines the screw press

The moving-and-fixed ring screen is the core advantage of the screw press. Continuous mechanical self-cleaning keeps the drainage gaps open without high-pressure wash water, which is why the machine tolerates oily and fibrous sludge that would quickly blind a belt or fine-mesh screen.

How the self-cleaning works

The screen is built from alternating fixed and moving rings separated by precise spacers that set the drainage gap. As the screw rotates it drives the moving rings in a slight relative motion against the fixed rings. This continuous sliding action wipes solids out of every gap on each revolution, so the openings never have time to blind. Because cleaning is mechanical and constant, the screw press needs only a small amount of low-pressure wash water compared with the high-pressure sprays and frequent belt washing of other technologies.

What this means in operation

  • Tolerates oily, fatty and fibrous sludge without rapid blinding.
  • Very low wash-water consumption and no high-pressure pumps.
  • Enclosed operation with minimal aerosols and odour.
  • Stable performance over long unattended runs.
