Screw Press vs. Sludge Thickener
Do you need a separate thickener before a screw press?
Overview
Dedicated thickeners (gravity belt, rotary drum, gravity table) concentrate dilute sludge before further treatment. A modern screw press has a generous flocculation and drainage zone and can accept dilute feed directly, often removing the need for a separate thickening stage. For very dilute or very high-volume streams, a thickener upstream can still improve overall economics.
A separate thickener may help when
- Feed solids are consistently below 0.5% DS
- Hydraulic volumes are very large relative to solids mass
- Digester feed or storage requires pre-concentration
Direct screw-press dewatering is usually better when
- Feed solids are 1% DS or higher
- A single, compact, low-maintenance unit is preferred
- Footprint and capital budget are constrained
