Screw Press vs. Membrane Filter Press
Maximum dryness batch process vs. continuous low-effort dewatering
Overview
Membrane filter presses add a squeeze-membrane step to the chamber press, achieving the driest cakes of any mechanical technology. They remain batch machines with high capital cost, cloth wear and operator involvement. Screw presses trade a few percentage points of cake dryness for continuous, low-maintenance, low-energy operation.
Head-to-Head
| Criteria | Screw Press | Membrane Filter Press |
|---|---|---|
| Cake DS | 15–25% | 35–50% |
| Operation | Continuous | Batch cycle |
| Capital cost | Low–Medium | High |
| Maintenance | Very low | High (membranes, cloths) |
| Energy | Very low | Medium–High |
| Operator need | Minimal | Significant |
Choose a membrane filter press when
- The driest possible cake is mandatory (e.g. hazardous waste, minimising disposal mass)
- Batch operation with dedicated operators is acceptable
- Disposal cost per tonne is very high, justifying extra dewatering
