Multi-Disc vs. Single-Screw Press Designs
How screw press filtration geometry affects performance
Overview
Screw presses differ mainly in how their filtration surface is built. Multi-disc designs use alternating fixed and moving rings that continuously self-clean the filtration gap, giving strong clogging resistance on oily and fibrous sludge. Simpler perforated-screen or wedge-wire cylinder designs are robust but can blind more easily and may need more wash water. Understanding this geometry is key to matching a press to a difficult sludge.
Design Comparison
| Aspect | Multi-Disc | Single-Screen Cylinder |
|---|---|---|
| Self-cleaning | Continuous (moving rings) | Periodic wash only |
| Oily/fibrous sludge | Excellent | Moderate |
| Wash water | Low | Higher |
| Clogging risk | Low | Higher |
| Maintenance | Low | Low–Medium |
