DAF Sludge Thickening
Thickening DAF float before or instead of dewatering
Thickening Before Dewatering
Thin DAF float — often below 1% dry solids — is expensive to store and haul and difficult to dewater directly. A screw thickener, or the integrated thickening zone of a screw press, raises the solids to 5–8% before the pressing stage, sharply reducing volume.
Thickening first stabilises the downstream dewatering step, lowers polymer demand per tonne and, where dewatering is not required, can itself deliver a pumpable thickened sludge for digestion or tankering.
Typical Sludge & Process Parameters
| Parameter | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Feed concentration | 0.3–1% DS |
| Thickened solids | 5–8% DS |
| Volume reduction | up to 90% |
| Solids capture | ≥ 95% |
